Word of Mouth: A City Guide to Biarritz

With our fourth city guide, we are returning to France, this time to the coastal town of Biarritz in the Pays Basque region. We have a special fondness for this place as our founder, Maggie, resides here. In addition to its beautiful beaches, the French capital of surf also offers excellent culinary, hospitality, culture, and more that are worth writing home about.

Where to stay

_Regina Experimental
The latest from Experimental Group, Hotel Regina is well-situated at the top of Saint Charles neighborhood, close to the famous lighthouse. From its site: “Built in 1907 by architect and landscape designer HENRY MARTINET, the Regina Hotel and Spa is a Belle Époque building emblematic of Biarritz, a seaside town on the French Basque Coast.

_Le Basta

A go-to for laid back breakfast or lunch by the sea. Known for its delicious hearty sandwiches, ideal to grab and take to the beach, Le Basta keeps things simple and authentic. A local favorite for a sunny terrace meal or a quick bite with a view.

_Cheri Bibi
This trendy spot focuses on innovative, locally-sourced cuisine served family-style. Opt for a selection of small plates to share, and don’t miss its wine cellar, where you can select a bottle for the table, or choose one to tote home!

_AHPE
This lively bistro celebrates each season with a menu that reflects the freshest ingredients with utilization of fermentation techniques alongside open-fire cooking.

_L’Impertinant
Live up to the name’s playful spirit with Chef Fabian Feldmann’s creative and irreverent take on French cuisine. He transforms the finest local ingredients, particularly fresh seafood, into innovative and delightful dishes.

_Gaztelur
Featuring a stunning chateau vibe, outdoor greenhouse, and inventive culinary collaborations in the summer months. 

_Zou
A lively Mediterranean-inspired restaurant and wine bar near Côte des Basques, serving Mediterranean-inspired small plates, fresh oysters, and natural wines in a laid-back setting.

_Moulin d’Alotz
A charming 17th‑century Basque watermill near Biarritz turned Michelin‑starred restaurant, where Chef Fabrice Idiart serves seasonal, nature-inspired tasting menus in a peaceful garden setting.

_Les Enfants du Marche
A bientôt‑ouvert bistro‑style restaurant in Biarritz, inspired by its Parisian namesake, promising seasonal, local-driven dishes and a cozy, lively atmosphere.

_Frenchie
A chic modern brasserie perched in the Regina Experimental hotel, where Chef Grégory Marchand elevates Basque terroir with creative flair, all served in a luminous dining room and on a terrace with sweeping ocean views.

_Cafe des Artistes

_Deoun
The only Korean BBQ restaurant in Biarritz, located at 9 Rue Harispe, where each table has its own built-in grill for cooking tender marinated meats, kimchi, bibimbap and more in a modern, convivial setting.

_Agapii Mou
A laid-back yet refined Greek-inspired bistro tucked into Biarritz’s Côte des Basques. Agapii Mou channels the warmth of Aegean hospitality with a rotating menu of wood-fired vegetables, seasonal seafood, and natural wines, all served on a sun-drenched terrace that hums with Mediterranean ease. Ideal for long lunches or golden-hour dinners.

Bakeries

_Maison Adam 
Indulge in their renowned macarons, a local favorite since the 17th century. Legend has it that in 1660, for the wedding of Louis XIV in Saint-Jean-de-Luz, the future king’s mother and Maria Theresa of Spain were captivated by the finesse of Monsieur Adam’s macarons. Try the classic "Paré Gabéa" for a taste of tradition.

_Coin de Table
Newcomer bringing the best pain au levain in town, alongside a tempting selection of gluten-free breads.

_Noisette
The noisette chocolate hazelnut tart is a must-try for pastry enthusiasts.

_Enneartz

_Cremerie St. Charles
Located in Bayonne’s market, this small cheese shop is a local favorite. You’ll find a great selection of raw-milk cheeses, Ossau-Iraty, creamy goat, aged tommes, all sourced from nearby farms. The team is friendly and happy to help you pick the perfect cheese for your picnic or apéro.

_Yaoya
This Japanese-inspired epicerie pays homage to Basque culture while sourcing some of the most sought after Japanese pantry staples, as well as stocking a few regional cult wines and low-ABV bottles. Don’t miss its apothecary, handmade ceramics, freshly baked bread, and occasional events.

_Plein Air floral
Stunning and rare florals to brighten your home or vacation.

_Marché de Quintaou (Thurs/Sun)
A lively open-air market that’s beloved by locals. Fresh produce, Basque cheeses, charcuterie, and oysters on the spot. Come hungry, leave with a basket full of good things.

_Marché de Bayonne (Sat)
Bayonne’s Saturday market is worth the short trip, packed with regional specialties, fishmongers, spice merchants, and the unmistakable scent of cured ham in the air. A feast for all the senses.

_Biocoop
A go-to for organic groceries and local pantry staples, fresh bread, nut butters, Basque honey, and biodynamic wine. Easy to swing by for picnic essentials or a reset shop.

_L’Eau Vive
A natural food store with a wide selection of health-conscious goods from herbal teas and supplements to bulk grains and non-toxic skincare. Great for thoughtful stocking.

_Ivette Cave à Vin
Part wine shop, part hangout. Ivette is where the locals go for natural wines, good energy, and impromptu tastings. The selection is sharp, and so is the soundtrack.

_Bar à Fromages
Tucked away but unforgettable, this little cheese bar serves up curated platters with local wines. Perfect for a cozy apéro or a deep dive into Basque dairy.

Biarritz is a surfer’s paradise, sometimes even called “Little California” – hit the waves or relax on the beach. There is no shortage of surf instructors or gear rental cabins to get you outfitted! A tiny, no-reservations spot in the heart of Biarritz that’s all about bold Basque flavors cooked over flame. With just a counter and a handful of stools, everything here happens in real time—whole fish, steaks, and seasonal vegetables grilled à la plancha and served with a glass of something natural.

_Denen Kanttua
Tucked away in the old town of Saint-Jean-de-Luz, Denen Kanttua feels like a warm embrace. The menu is local and seasonal—line-caught fish, Basque pork, slow-simmered sauces, all served in a cozy, wood-lined dining room. It’s the kind of place where you linger over dessert and forget about time.

More than a shop, Olakoop is a cooperative celebrating the richness of local, ethical production. Inside, you’ll find shelves of organic pantry goods, natural wines, handmade soaps, and Basque specialties, all sourced directly from nearby farmers and artisans.

_Sweet Pea
A pastel-hued patisserie tucked near the Biarritz market, Sweet Pea feels like a slice of London with a Basque accent. The cakes and pastries are delicate, creative, and made with real care—think lemon-lavender loafs, flaky scones, and seasonal tarts.

_La Table de Megumi
A quiet gem tucked along the Ciboure harbor, La Table de Megumi offers Japanese precision with a French soul. Run by a couple who do it all, cook, serve, host. The experience is intimate and heartfelt. The tasting menu changes with the seasons, balancing umami, freshness, and just a touch of surprise.

_Maitenia
